The Waiting...

The Waiting...

At LCAD Art College, having just graduated in 2009, immediately I auditioned to do a 'storyboard' screen test for a big animation company in Los Angeles. I had to complete a scene where two characters had a disagreement, but had I no ideas. My family came down from Northern California and I babysat my nephew. His hyper active behavior awoke something inside and then I really had an idea. My nephew Gabriel was very shy at first, but after playing with him and his toys I was able to tap into my own inner-child, and that shaped the entire storyboard script. Illustrated and digitally finished on time (120-122 boards) in two weeks but unfortunately, it was not up to par quality for the best presentation. So I received a letter saying, ‘We like your rough style and sense of humor, but at this time we feel it is not the right fit for our current project.’ I felt rejected but determined to press on with animation and keep in contact with the studio but as contact after new contact fell thru, I kept the project on hold until I could finish it up to the justice that it deserved. Years later, and having moved back to Northern California, I re-connected with my Storyboarding teacher from LCAD who now works at Pixar and he gave me some great advice on how to fix certain scenes that I was struggling with and that was when I realized I had to put the voices into it, as it was not yet a story-reel fully edited with limited movement and sound. To this day it still remains a work in progress, but as you can see in a few scenes that in its charm and dark style sense of drama, it gives off a feeling of childish eeriness and still my best storyboard work today. Currently I am working on recording the voices and finishing the demo reel for a personal animation project and possible future submission.
